New York - Fou Gallery is delighted to invite you to our Ikebana and Tea Ceremony on October 5th, responding to the ongoing exhibition Michael Eade: past is present is future. As a participant, you will enjoy the Ikebana performance led by Ye zi and tea ceremony by Daisy (Lanzhi) Dai, contemplate between Eade’s splendid tempera paintings and porcelain sculptures, and experience an ideal realm of nature in reflection.

Flower artist Ye zi will implement Ikebana flower arrangement on Eade’s “Nurse Log” porcelain sculpture as a flower container. Ikebana respects the natural characteristics of plants, intending to create serene forms with profound connotations. The floristic materials used in the arrangement are pure and simple, and the different states of flowers, leaves, and branches represent the past, present, and future of life. Ye zi will construct a lush and vigorous natural microworld with plants on “Nurse Log”, epitomizing the eternity of the universe by presenting the natural cycle of life in organic forms.

“Tea is the essence of vegetation.” Tea practitioner Daisy (Lanzhi) Dai will present a contemporary Chinese tea ceremony and share three kinds of tea - Premium White Tea from Fuding, Jinjunmei Tea from Tongmuguan, and Red Oolong from Taiwan / Rock Tea from Wuyishan. Participants will follow Dai to perform the rituals of brewing, observing, smelling and sipping the tea, and appreciate the beauty of the aromatic atmosphere constituted by tea leaves, the water, the heat, the tea set, and everyone’s manners and emotions. Together, we will experience the four principles of tea -  “和、敬、清、寂 He, Jing, Qing, Ji”: Harmony of Nature, Modesty from Virtues, Silence in Calmness, and Serenity with Constancy.

Ye zi has been studying Ikebana, traditional Japanese flower arrangement, since 2017. She is a student of Paula Tam, the former president of Ikebana International New York Chapter (2013-2015). Fascinated by the emphasis on shape, line, and form of the plants in Ikebana, Ye zi aims to embrace those principles of Ikebana and input her own aesthetic conception into the arrangements she creates.
