We all possess a personal map, based on our daily routines and experiences. It contains lines that we have passed, and then forms into circles, intersections, and boundaries. We interact with space more than we could imagine, not just physically, but also historically and psychologically. Through the documentation, imagination and reconstruction of space, we start to realize who we are, contemplate our relationship with this world, and how to use the space in the future.

“Stories of Space” film screening event portrays different locations, varying from an old factory in Italy, Central Mexico, the Internet, and virtual reality. Negotiating and echoing with space, characters in this series deal with preserving memories, decolonizing cultures, discussing gender identification, and re-defining sexual intimacy. The series contains different film and video genres, including documentary, experimental non- fiction, and narrative.

The screening event accompanies Siyuan Tan’s solo exhibition Face Off, and examines the confrontation between virtual and physical spaces. Along with the discussion is a cocktail experience curated by Siyuan Tan.

Destiny of a Factory (“Il destino di una fabbrica”)

2013, 50min

Directed by Victoria Catherine Chan

A former industrial complex stands on the brink of conversion into a technology park. Meanwhile, the remaining workers still strive inside the old plant. Destiny of a Factory observes a post-industrial realm while portraying the daily life of the working class. It’s a tableau depicting memoirs, archive materials, and visions of the future in virtual 3D. Here, the next generation is shaped with optimism and the fate of the last workers is yet unknown. Victoria Catherine Chan’s film raises questions about the value of work in today’s society and the consequences of what is yet to come.

“Buscando a Marina” (Looking for Marina)

2019, 10min

Directed by Jean Carla Rodea

Through this work, Rodea seeks a deeper understanding of the life of a woman known as “La Malinche.” She played a key role in the so-called Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. Marina acted as an interpreter, advisor, and intermediary for the Spanish conquistador, Hernán Cortés. This woman’s story is often frowned upon since she is considered a traitor and Rodea argues that she was actually a mediator who set in motion resistance practices by challenging euro-centric roles assigned to women. Her story has tremendous potential to challenge and disrupt normative/biased narratives regarding gender.

Victoria Catherine Chan

Jean Carla Rodea

Masks Inside

2017, 14 min
Directed by Emma Yi

“Masks Inside” contains time-based, episodic and independent stories. Named after the main character (e.g. "Gisella," etc.), each story examines the subjects' different behaviors according to their personalities, and explores issues including gender, language, psychology, and space.

void silence () {

2016, 10 min

Directed by Emma Yi

Foucault once said that things that are not ordered would be driven out, denied and reduced to silence, and “repression operated as a sentence to disappear, but also as an injunction to silence, an affirmation of nonexistence.” Silence, then, is a forced result of power; it is a symbol of nonexistence, or concealed facts. Applying Foucauldian theory into this work ironically, this piece is focused on building another parallel reality that centers silence as its language.

void silence () {

I-ris

2019, 12min

Directed by Leila Garrison

In a world where people can get eye implants to adjust what they see, complications with one girl’s operation cause her traumas to manifest visually. Stylistically referencing B-movies of the 70s and 80s, this short film explores queer desire, carnal repulsion, and the trauma of sexual awakening.

I-ris

导演:Leila Garrison
